What is Incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is the unintentional loss of urine. There are four main types of incontinence: stress incontinence, urge incontinence, overflow incontinence, and overactive bladder. Women are twice as likely to face incontinence as men since pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause are all major risk factors for developing incontinence. Additionally, incontinence can be caused or worsened by uncontrolled diabetes, enlarged prostate, Parkinson’s, strokes, and spinal cord injuries.
Stress Incontinence
Stress incontinence is the loss of small amounts of urine associated with coughing, laughing, sneezing, exercising, or other movements that increase the pressure on the bladder. It is caused by poor closure of the bladder.
Urge Incontinence
Urge incontinence is a sudden urgent desire to pass urine that results in urine leaks before being able to get to the toilet. This is usually caused by an overactive bladder and unstable detrusor muscle.
Overflow Incontinence
Overflow incontinence is an involuntary release of urine due to an overfull bladder, often without the urge to urinate. This is usually due to either the bladder muscle being too weak to empty or blockage of the urethra.
Overactive Bladder (OAB)
OAB is a frequent urge to urinate, so much so that it decrease the person’s quality of life. Although the cause of an overactive bladder is unknown, there are known risk factors that include: obesity, caffeine, and constipation.

There are a wide variety of treatment options for incontinence. More conservative treatments include behavior management, bladder retraining, and pelvic floor therapy. If weight is a cause of incontinence, doctors will recommend weight loss. Medications, surgery, and exercise can also be used to treat incontinence.
