Dr. Canter is multi board certified in Female Pelvic Medicine, Reconstructive Surgery, and Obstetrics & Gynecology. She was one of the first surgeons in the country to be boarded with both specialties. Dr. Canter improves quality of life for women by using minimally invasive techniques such as the vConfidence procedure with Viveve Geneveve to treat incontinence and sexual function. She can address vaginal prolapse, including prolapsed bladder, rectum and uterus. She is a national expert in female incontinence and urinary incontinence surgery and believes in working with each patient to determine what works best for that patient to deliver a tailored treatment approach.
Dr. Canter graduated from Boston College Magna Cum Laude and as Scholar of the College with a degree in Biology. Her summers were spent at the NIH Summer Student Program. It was there that she witnessed her first surgery and realized the potential for surgery to impact quality of life. She returned home to go to Georgetown University School of Medicine where she decided to pursue a career in Women’s Health. She completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Georgetown University Medical Center graduating with the Minimally Invasive Endoscopy Award. A three year fellowship ensued in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in Louisville, KY.
Dr. Maria Canter Urogynecology Center NoVa opened in May 2016 after having practiced in Northern Virginia for over 10 years and is excited to be delivering the vConfidence procedure to her patients across Northern Virginia.
